Rex

Rex' pointillistic style is finely detailed and exquisitely rendered, the stark black and white draws your eye and holds you transfixed. His fetish subject matter shows a dark and sometimes disturbing world that fascinates even as it repulses, and leaves you wanting more. But since Rex is a very private - even reclusive - artist, more is not very easy to obtain. And when you find it, it's often of poor quality due to repeated copying of inferior original versions.

His website, RexWerk, seems to be by invitation only. I read a number of comments by others who were trying to gain access in order to join, but were unable to discover a way in. I had the same problem. If anyone who reads this is a member, and would like to help me out with that, I'd really love to see more of his work. I appreciate his reluctance - his subject matter is often considered taboo, dealing as it sometimes does with such touchy subjects as bestiality and pedophilia. It's understandable that he feels the need, but it's a shame that it's so hard to see his work.

Note: Size and quality may vary. I did my best to pick drawings with the best quality, but occasionally I chose subject matter over detail in order to make the collection more representative of his work.

His Website: RexWerk

The Explicit Art of Rex at The Erotic Art Collection - this is where I first saw his art and fell in love with The Last Drop, my personal favorite Rex drawing.

Jack Fritscher - who knew Rex while Fischer was with the famous San Francisco gay magazine Drummer, wrote several articles featuring Rex. They are located on his website here: RexWerk! The Artist, the Work, the Gallery This page rambles on a bit, but there is a lot of good info on Rex there. The two also collaborated on a video of Rex' work entitled: The Rex Video Gallery: Corrupt Beyond Innocence.

RexWerk - a book of Rex' art. Limited edition of 1500 copies - published in 1986 in Paris, by Les Pirates Associes, with text in French and English, 50 b/w drawings. This copy sells for close to $300 used. I've added this to my wish list...maybe some day. (Hah.)

I found some of his art at Delftboys' Website, in the Boys Club (letters and comments to AD - the webmaster) - the drawings are about 2/3rds of the way down the page, just scroll down. Delftboys also has three pages of his art in the Masterclass section, but that area is members only, so you'd have to pay to see those.

A short article from A Guy Site blog: The Talent . Rex Werk

Enjoy!

Beau

Most of Beau's art was made to illustrate erotic stories in gay magazines such as Advocate Men and Freshmen, which explains why I hadn't seen much of it until I got into gay porn several years ago. I really enjoy the deep, lush colors in Beau's art, and the characters' expressive faces and overt sensuality practically force your imagination to invent wild and erotic scenarios around the the paintings - even if you don't know the stories he's illustrating.

Consider The Act (directly below.) Despite the wide open mouth, you could almost miss the cock in the bottom right corner of the painting - those wide, trusting eyes aren't even looking in that direction - he's focused on the face of the man whose hand is cupping his chin. And why is he kneeling, nude, when it's obvious the man standing in front of him is still dressed? Yum. The Act is my favorite painting by Beau, no doubt. But don't worry, there's plenty more.

As always, click on the images to see the full sized pictures.
Note: some are quite large.
Second Note: the names of the paintings are often taken from the story they illustrated.

There's no current website for Beau, but here's the closest thing I could find:

The World of Beau - in Erotic Art Collection's Archive. The site hasn't been updated since before Beau's first book came out in 2004, but there's lots of interesting things to check out - including an introduction into how Beau develops his paintings. There are two small collections of his art there: The Art of Beau and The Explicit Art of Beau

Beautiful Mag posted some good information on Beau, along with some excellent art work from his second book, in this article: Beau

I found a large collection of Beau's work on Area51 - unfortunately the index is broken, so the following link points you to the directory - you just have to slog through all the links. Many pictures are duplicated with larger copies, scans from the magazines with widely varying quality, cropped pictures and retouched copies that have edited or "photo-shopped" out the text of the accompanying stories. It's a lot of trouble, but I think it's worth it: Area51's Beau Collection

According to Beautiful Mag, Beau was in an auto accident in 2002, and is no longer able to paint. I consider that quite a loss to the Gay Art Community. But they also said he's taken up photography - and that's good news. I hope we see more from him soon.

Both his books, BeauMen and BeauMen2, are for sale from Amazon.com.

Enjoy!

Minoru

It seems strange to call Minoru's art "subtle" when you consider his subject matter is big hairy guys, but that's the word that usually springs to my mind. His drawings are precisely rendered, and he captures his subjects in fine detail that still catches me by surprise on occasion, despite how long I've admired his work. His subtle use of color indicates restraint and control, wrapped up in the powerful bodies he portrays.

I've included one watercolor in this batch - he doesn't do many, at least not that I've seen, but it's one of my favorite pieces of his. You can see several oil paintings on his site that head in the other direction - strong use of color that compliments his chosen subject matter. I didn't use any here though, because the watermarks were so prominent on those. Unfortunately, most of his work has prominently placed watermarks, so I was limited in what I could post. But I managed to get some of my favorites in this batch - pay special attention to "Pinky Fuck," "The Urinal" and "Sleepy."

Minoru's Web Site: Art by Minoru

I first found Minoru's art in The Tom of Finland Foundation's Galleries, and I liked the few pieces I found there well enough that I went looking for more. Not too many other places on the web have it - at least, not that I could find. There's a fair amount of it on his site, but at least three of the pieces I have here are not found there. Unfortunately, I didn't mark my source when I found them several years ago - so I have no idea where else to look for them, now. If I find that source again, I'll add it to the list.

Enjoy!

Michael Kirwan

I'm fascinated by Michael Kirwan's art. I think part of the reason is that his subjects are not models, or part of the "beautiful people" set. They're very imperfect - very real - very human. His subject matter ranges from "everyday" gay erotica to the fairly kinky: he doesn't shy away from subjects on the edge of respectability like infidelity, spanking and discipline, underage sex, intergenerational sex, water sports, incest and violence. And I love his style - the colors in his art really attract my attention.

I can't tell you how hard it was to pick out a dozen or so pictures from the over 800 he has posted on his site. That's right: I said over 800. And most of them are gay oriented. He does have some het on site, since he did a fair amount of illustrating het sex before his gay art became popular enough to support him. Kirwan has done some professional photography of nude and semi-nude men as well, which is also available on his site.

Michael Kirwan's Website

I didn't see much of his art elsewhere, but everything I did see, I also found on his site, so I think this link is plenty. He also writes gay erotica as well as his photography, so there's plenty to see on his webpage. Check him out.

Enjoy!
